How to Get to Valdonedo?

Most of our international visitors arrive by plane — the closest airport is Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto (also known simply as Porto Airport).

Once you land, head to the information desk inside the airport and ask how to get to the Metro station. Please note: the Metro stop is not called “Porto Airport” — it’s officially named Aeroporto.

From Aeroporto station, take the Metro to Campanhã Station (Porto’s main railway hub), where you can catch a regional train heading east.

Your destination is Marco de Canaveses. Once you arrive, we’ll be happy to pick you up by car — it’s about a 15-minute drive from Marco de Canaveses to Penha Longa – Valdonedo. Please contact us by phone or e-mail at info@valdonedo.net and get in touch with us.

We can’t wait to welcome you!

Arrival by car / caravan

In 2023, we began construction on a new parking area for cars and caravans.
The covered carport was completed in 2024, and starting in late 2025, a stationary caravan underneath it will be available to rent.

How to Find Us

If you're arriving by car, take the A11 motorway and use Exit 16 toward Vila Meã / Marco de Canaveses, then follow the N211.

To reach us, turn off at Rua do Valdonedo, which connects directly to the N108 in Piares.

Please note: The driveway down to the house is quite steep. We recommend parking at the top of the road first and walking down to get a sense of the descent — especially if you're driving a larger vehicle.

Arrival by Train

From Porto, you can take a regional train to Marco de Canaveses.
The journey takes about one hour and offers scenic views along the way.

Marco de Canaveses is the closest larger town to Penha Longa and Piares, about 20 minutes away by car.
More information and train tickets are available at Omio.

Arrival by Bus

While there is a bus connection from Marco de Canaveses to Piares — operated by Transdev Portugal — we do not recommend using the bus, as it tends to be expensive and time-consuming.
Piares is a small village within Penha Longa, located in the Tâmega e Sousa region.

Accommodation

Accommodation Options

In addition to bringing your own caravan or camper van, you're also welcome to camp on-site.
Our spacious grounds offer plenty of beautiful spots to pitch a tent and enjoy nature.

If camping isn’t your thing, there are a few Airbnb options available about 30 minutes from Valdonedo.
Another alternative is the Douro Hotel, which offers a more comfortable (and slightly more expensive) stay in a lovely atmosphere.

Sanitary Facilities

In 2023/24, we transformed an old distillery into a sustainable sanitary building.
It’s equipped with a dry toilet, washbasin, and a shower.
Hot water was installed in 2024.

Additional facilities — including washing stations, seating areas, and a relaxation zone near the tents — are planned and will be added gradually over the coming years.

Laundry

In Portugal, most supermarkets offer washing and drying services.
Since late 2024, we have our own washing machine on-site.
In Winter, we still dry clothes at the supermarket, as we don't yet have a dryer.

Internet
We don’t offer full-site Wi-Fi, as Wi-Fi radiation can impact local flora and fauna, and our mission is to work with nature, not against it.
The houses that are currently being renovated will provide sufficient LAN connections (via cable) in the future.
It is not forbidden to use W-Lan, as we also have to make do in our current situation until the houses are finished.
Just come and talk to us and we will find a solution.

Kitchen

The kitchen has moved into the rebuilt distillery, which now also houses the toilet and shower.
If you need a camping stove, kettle, or other essentials, feel free to reach out — we’re happy to help.

Waste Management

Please use the bins provided and let us know if any are full or overflowing.
Organic waste can go into our bokashi buckets or directly into the compost.
We're constantly working to minimize waste and build better recycling systems.

Anything Else?

If you have questions or run into challenges — just come talk to us.
We believe in finding solutions together.
